I was in the Werndale from Thursday till Sunday. For three days the care was excellent. The nurses and doctors I met were very caring and helpful. I suffered no pain and they were prompt to attend to my every need. I suffered a severe allergic reaction to the plaster which covered my wound and they really took trouble to give me relief. The catering staff were so nice and really tried to accommodate me. I had no appetite and they went out of their way to help me. They gave excellent food to my husband also. I filled in a form giving everyone top marks....that was before I was discharged. The Sunday morning was extremely cold and wet. I was woken nearly, the night nurse helped me to shower, packed my case, gave me medication to take home and told me that the hospital was going to close for two days and that I must wait for a physiotherapist. I asked her what I should do when I got home and she told me I must be fully mobile and a district nurse would attend to my scar. Then she disappeared. The physiotherapist. gave me about ten minutes with instructions I found confusing. I asked her about post operational care and she told me that I must lie down at home. The whole place seemed empty so we decide we had better just leave. We could not find the way out till a cleaner showed us. I was shocked and disappointed because it was such a contrast to the care I had been receiving. I had intended to ask for another day because my back was full of suppurating blisters from the wound dressing and I really did not feel very good at all. I was very confused about post operation advice. How could I be fully mobile and lie down! My husband and I try to be positive, but it was a dismal homecoming. We phoned the GP on Monday and a nurse came and changed my dressing. A couple of days later someone phoned from the Werndale and asked if I had felt pushed out without discussion.... I said well yes I did feel that...so she said I was to ring back if I had any queries. I am 85 and my husband is 92. We are new to the area and do not know many people. We definitely struggled for a few days. I rang the Werndale a couple of times but was passed around to various people who could not give me help. In the end I got put through to a physiotherapist who was . Her name was Mary who waslovely. She answered all my questions and as it was a long drive to Banc y Felin for physiotherapy transferred all my operation notes to my own physiotherapist who is first class. He helped me to come off the pain killers and has given me a programme to follow. I am not registering a complaint and would not have written this if I had not been asked my opinion. I am grateful for the excellent care I received for three days and do not wish to apportion blame. At the same time, My husband and I are very active despite our age and usually extremely positive but I cannot help what would happen to someone less able to take care of themselves. We have no insurance and as pensioners we were fortunate to have savings which we willingly spent for my care.... and do not regret it in the least. Mr. Verghese did an excellent job and I am on the way to full recovery. it is just so sad that all this happened.

The general staffing was good and helpful, BUT the menu was VERY limited and not really suitable for someone like myself at 85 years of age. I was offered the same food lunchtime and evening for 3 days.
